variety of silkscreens and lithographs offered by Peggity’s were produced by the
ABC Learning Company for elementary school teachers primarily in the 1930s, 1940s and
1950s. Artists would donate or sell their artwork to the company to be reproduced for
kindergarten classrooms and grade school teachers to use in teaching arts and crafts,
history, social studies, arithmetic, geography as well as various other subjects. Because
of the period during which they were created we assume they are silkscreens and lithographs
reproduced by the best printing processes known at the time.
Many of the pictures coming from the ABC Learning Company, especially in the later years,
have a barely perceptible seal that was sometimes embossed in the lower right or left
hand corner. It says ABC Learning Company. Founded 1925. Quality Teaching Aides. It is
almost impossible to discern and virtually impossible to see in a framed work. This seal
assured classroom buyers that they were getting a quality product from a quality company.
Today, when and if you can find artworks from the ABC Learning Company you will find
they are not only appealing as fine art, they are also extraordinary souvenirs from the
school days of yesteryear! Many of our customers have commented that they remember seeing
these images when they were youngsters. We are always searching for work produced by the ABC Learning Company, though like most
fine art from this period, it is getting very hard to find, especially work in good condition. |
