About The Book: The CAROL SUMMERS WOODCUTS 50 YEAR RETROSPECTIVE CATALOG is a four-color, 64-page art book showing an overbody of woodcut prints by master modernist printmaker Carol Summers. It features images of 50 of his (yes, it is a he) woodcuts created between 1950 and 2000. This 50 YEAR RETROSPECTIVE CATALOG was published and originally sold in conjunction with two major retrospective exhibitions at museums in New York and California in the year 2000; the Library of Congress Catalog Number is 99-93728. It is out-of-print today. We acquired these catalogs a few years ago to give to our customers when they purchased original Summers woodcuts sold at Peggity's. This catalog has been personally signed by the artist now in his 80s.

To the delight of his worldwide collectors, a large number of Summers early woodcut prints are reproduced in this catalog: View From Taormina, Dream, Night, Rainbow Glacier, Spirits of Trees plus 45 more completed throughout the printmaker's 50 plus year career. Also included are pictures of woodblocks in the Art India Woodcut Series and as well as those completed after Summers' travels to the Mediterranean, Japan, Africa, the South Pacific, Central America, Mexico, China, Tibet and throughout the United States. The woodcuts featured in this book were personally selected by the artist. Page-size samples of the Japanese woodblock paper that Summers uses for his woodcuts are inserted inside both the front and back covers.

About The Artist: The woodcuts of Carol Summers, one of the country's first modernist printmakers, are in the permanent collections of virtually every major museum in the world including the MET, MOMA, the LA County Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Kunstmuseums throughout Europe plus several museums throughout in Asia. His work is shown and discussed in over 25 important art reference books and he enjoys such stature that he is one of the few contemporary artists to be listed in the bible for art collectors, critics and curators, Who Was Who In American Art and in the prestigious online reference library AskArt.

Summers was a pioneer in the creation of super size woodblock prints referred to today as monumental woodcuts. He is famous for modernist landscapes, his use of saturated color and the sense of well-being that viewers of his art universally experience. The Carol Summers Woodcut Printmaking Technique, which he invented, is taught in fine arts studios and universities throughout the world. The entire body of work created by this master American printmaker over the past 60 years is included in the another catalog offered here: CAROL SUMMERS WOODCUTS CATALOG RAISONNE.
