Snapshot In Time: There was another "flowering landscape" happening when Carol Summers was creating his. For example, it must have been a sight to see..... after the worst fire in a century, in Yellowstone National Park a record number of pine seeds popped forth as the heat from smoldering embers opened up millions of pine cones over 88,000 square acres. Most took hold in the rich mineral ash and in the coming years it truly was a flowering landscape.

Art Smart Fact: Many artists given an assignment to use Radial Balance in a landscape struggle to do so. Radial balance calls for the elements in a picture to branch out in all directions from one common point. Radial balance is most common in tribal art and in still lifes, not landscapes. FLOWERING LANDSCAPE is like an abstract landscape painting; a visual analogy that portrays a landscape as a flower...the water in the landscape is the center of the flower. The hills and valleys and greenbelt forests are the petals.....this is a woodblock print that is not only artful, it exemplifies the textbook definition of radial balance.

About The Art: In the 1980s, from his home and studio in Northern California’s coastal mountains, Summers continued to work as a woodblock printmaker supplementing his income by conducting classes and workshops at colleges and universities throughout the country. He also traveled extensively during this period hiking and camping, often for weeks at a time, primarily in the western United States and Canada. Throughout the decade it was not unusual for Summers to backpack alone or with a fellow artist into the mountains or back country for six weeks or more at a time. Not surprisingly, the woodblock art created during this period rarely departed from images of the land, sea and sky. Especially noteworthy is that FLOWERING LANDSCAPE is one of the few totally abstract landscapes Summers has created in a portfolio that encompasses over 240 individual images for various size editions of woodblock prints completed over a 55 year span of time. It is the last one in the edition available!
