About The Book: Carol Summers' ANOTHER TREASURY OF INDIAN FOLK TEXTILES is the second catalog showing a dazzling array of folk textiles from India created primarily between 1905 and 1952. The stunning examples of textiles included in the book are also from Summers' own personal collection which he has painstakingly acquired over the last 30 years. Published in 2006, four years after the first catalog, this 64-page, four-color book measures 11” by 9” in size. It is #112 in a limited edition publication run of 1,000. In addition, this catalog has been personally signed by Carol Summers.

Highlighting the catalog are three centerfolds, each of which opens to an arm’s length spread and features a multicolor, wall-size hanging which has an entire story woven and embroidered into a mural of fabric. You will see many human characters, animals as well as exquisite abstract patterns that were rendered by everyday weavers and needleworkers in the country villages of India over half a century ago. One of the fold-outs shows a 4 1/2 foot high by 15 foot long brilliantly colored textile backdrop. It was used to showcase performances by “vaudeville” acts that traveled from village to village in the early part of the century. This coffee-table quality book features over 50 four-color photographs; it was was published in 2006 and has been issued a Library of Congress Catalog reference number of 2005936186.

In the book’s opening pages, Carol Summers continues the essay begun in the first catalog, this time focusing on the love of collecting everyday things that have been rendered with extraordinary craftsmanship. Carol Summers confesses “I count myself blessed that my fellow collectors largely share a bias against the general ravages of time and use. I prefer a dog-eared queen to a perfect courtier.” After his first trip to India over 30 years ago, Summers began collecting vintage Indian textiles that had been made with dyes and materials that were no longer used. He was amazed at the detailed work and smitten by the uninhibited love of color and playfulness in the many things made with fabric for everyday use. The collection and images in this second catalog include more wall-hangings, quilts and blankets and various articles of clothing all woven or embroidered by hand, some over 100 years ago.

Carol Summers (Am: b. 1925- ), is considered by many art historians to be among only a handful of master printmakers alive today as well as one of the most notable woodcut artists who worked throughout the entire second half of the 20th century. It is not surprising that Summers has a special affinity for the early folk textiles of India. His own art is also known for bold, flowing designs and vivid, saturated colors. He portrays the natural in world in a quintessential simplicity in part by mixing geometric shapes such as squares, triangles and circles with organic shapes that are irregular in outline. Summers was also a pioneer in the creation of large, oversize woodcuts referred to today by museum curators as "monumental" woodcuts. His work is unique, his methodology his own invention and today the "Carol Summers Technique" is taught in art schools and universities throughout the world.
