Snapshot In Time: Carol Summers created the woodblock print GALACTIC FOUNTAIN in 2001 immediately after news came out about the fantastic “galactic fountain” in our own Milky Way Galaxy! NASA had initiated an archaeology mission to space, searching for relics of the Big Bang that most scientists believe created the universe some 12 billion years ago. A robot explorer was shot into space to collect evidence impossible to detect with earthbound telescopes. One of the theories scientists were able to prove from the evidence returned was that our Milky Way Galaxy actually contains a huge and vast galactic fountain that bubbles with interstellar gases and elements continuously spewing out brand new stars and planets! What a great way for us to start off the new millennium. Art Smart Fact: Since the time of the painting of the Sistine Chapel, scale has become an integral part of art. Scale in an image, like a scale in a produce market, acts to show a relationship between objects. Rather than measuring weight, however, visual scale deals with the relative size of objects. By manipulating the size of a picture and the objects within it, scale can produce a number of effects. GALACTIC FOUNTAIN is a stellar example of an artist who has mastered the use of scale in his work and it is one of only a few large, vertical woodblock prints created by Summers during a career that has lasted well over half a century. Over three feet high and two feet wide, GALACTIC FOUNTAIN depicts two galaxies flowing up and then down the sides of the fountain. The planets and stars and constellations here are not distant as in real life. They fill the space which gives this image a larger than life scale. Carol Summers wants us to both see and think big! About The Art: GALACTIC FOUNTAIN is one of only a few woodcut prints created in the last decade that feature this printmaker's popular night skies and starry heavens. As usual, the artwork is filled with Summers’ energy and joie de vivre that often affects it's viewers. Sometimes Summers' starry night scenes are linked to an event such as this astro-discovery or the sighting of the Great Comet as in VECINO LEJOS. Sometimes the woodblock is smaller in size as with NORTHERN LIGHTS or long as with the astronaut’s view of the evening horizon in NIGHT. Carol Summers shows us a full understanding of the relationship between the world we know on earth and the vast expanses of the universe.....in this picture the galactic fountain bubbles over with new stars and planets while the hills and river tie our own world to them.
